Trying to "localize" this out would be next to impossible, and in these sorts cases you'd want to keep them.īy the way, the Persona games actually tend to "localize" the honorifics and such in weird ways and you're not actually getting an "authentic" experience in those. But they could also be kept without much fuss, and it wouldn't really matter either way.īut then you have games like Muv Luv Alternative, where how each character refers to each other is used both to further characterization (the main character has a different way of calling every other character, and every other character has a different way of calling him) and as a plot point. Danganronpa would be one easy example where there isn't really anything in the game that requires the use of such language, and it can easily be localized out even though the setting's still in Japan. Then there's games that take place in Japan, or with a Japanese cast, where such things don't really matter at all. In stuff that is supposed to take place in a Western style fantasy setting, or with characters from real life nations other than Japan, it doesn't make much sense to keep them.
Just in Guilty Gear Xrd alone, there's a fair bit that's either left without any dub / sub treatment, or straight mis-translated. I'm sure there are hundreds of different examples, I only know a little bit of the language, but even I spot mistakes and literal re-writes in several games I play that I've taken a look at the original writing of. I think the latter sounds a little better, but Renzokuken definitely rolls off the tongue better.
Similarly, Cloud's Omnislash is changed from the original Choukyuu Bushin Hazan, which I think goes along the lines of Peerless Swordsmanship if you were to translate it to English. I do think you should avoid using literal Japanese terms if you're going to sub / dub into English, but there are times when it just sounds better leaving it as it.įor example, Squall's Renzokuken literally just means something along the lines of continuous sword slashes, or relentless assault.
I can see arguments for both sides, as I don't think you could ever get a 1:1 meaning when you have 2 languages that are so different.
